LucaZoneX, TS2017 was originally released in 2007 and has been developed and expanded over the years with hundreds of trains, routes and mods released for it over that time. Its still going strong and will be around for a fair while Im sure, but it is the previous generation tech. Its not 64bit, doesnt support multi-threading and cant make use of modern graphics rendering.
TSW is DTGs new generation TrainSim. Released in March this year it is at the start of its own 10 year cycle. Its fully 64bit, it uses all the latest graphical and physics enhancements to ensure it competes with other games of today, and it has years of expansion and feature development ahead of it. However, as its only been out a short time, there is very little variety in terms of trains and routes as yet. But they will come.
The model DTG use is that customers only need to buy the base game once. Additional features, functionality and fixes developed over time then get added for free to enhance the software over time. DTG makes its money selling additional Route and Train addons that users can pick and choose the ones that interest them. Users are free to build their own collection rather each train and route being a requirement of the game. This is a hobby.
